MOBILES

OLD MOBILE PHONES are of great value personal and social value in South-Africa. Because of the high unemployment in the area and poor public transport those lucky enough to work are often forced to work away from home. They are away from their family during the week and for weeks at the time. The areas are very rural with little electricity and no phone lines. This means that people can not have contact their families. This can be especially worrying with young children, elderly and sick family members left behind with no means of contact in case of emergency.

Mobile phones are very expensive in South-Africa, the sim cards and airtime on the other hand relatively cheap. You can make someone very happy and reassure them with your old mobile phone!

NOTE: your phones MUST NOT BE SIM-LOCKED (your provider or local mobile phone shop can unlock it for you) as this is makes them unusable in South Africa. An adaptor is welcome, but not essential as adaptors can be bought fairly cheaply. So go on and have a look in your cupboards and see if you can make someone happy!
